The Secret to Turning Dreams into Reality: Goal Setting

If you don’t know where you’re going, it doesn’t matter which road you take.

Lewis Carroll / Alice in Wonderland

Without knowing where we are going, we cannot chart our course! Similarly, without truly understanding what we want, living the life we desire is impossible. So, how can we create a life where we wake up every day with excitement and motivation, feel successful, fulfilled, and productive, and live with gratitude?

Here, I share with you the simple yet effective steps I personally follow to “Turn Dreams into Achievable Goals.”

  1. Turn inward and ask yourself, “What do I truly want?” Sometimes, what we think we want is not actually what we truly desire. Be specific—what kind of job, what kind of partner, living conditions, health, friendships? How do you want to feel? What emotions and experiences do you want to have? Start by defining these.

  1. Once you are certain of what you truly want, wish for it wholeheartedly. Imagine it, pray for it, ask for help. Raise your energy and enthusiasm, and start feeling as if you already belong to that dream. I highly recommend writing it down. Writing helps you reflect on your desires, solidifies your commitment, and sends a powerful message to your subconscious.

The difference between a dream and a goal is action.

  1. This step is crucial—it is the most important part of turning your dreams into reality. Transform your dreams into goals. A goal is a specific point you aim to reach. Identify the paths and timeframes necessary to get there. Plan your actions, determine your needs, and figure out what you can do on your own and where you might need help.

  1. When setting your goals, make sure they align with the following criteria. You can create simple templates to evaluate your progress.
  • Your goal should be specific and clear. Instead of saying, “I want a promotion,” define a concrete target like, “I want to become a Marketing Manager.” Then, outline the steps necessary to achieve this goal and break it down into smaller objectives.
  • Your goal should be measurable. You should have clear indicators to track your progress and stay motivated. For example, “To become a Marketing Manager, I need at least five years of experience. I have two years left, and in that time, I will complete three specific courses to develop the required skills.” By completing each course, you will see yourself getting closer to your goal.
  • Your goal should be achievable. Your goals should challenge you while still being attainable. They should be within your control and not entirely dependent on others. For example, “I will allocate 10% of my monthly income to take the necessary courses to become a Marketing Manager. I have the financial and time resources to do this.” This way, you ensure that achieving the goal is primarily within your control.
  • Your goal should be realistic. Your goals must align with your life situation, available resources, and personal aspirations. Unrealistic goals make it harder to believe in your success and weaken your motivation over time. For example, if you are a recent graduate with a degree in Chemistry, setting a goal to become a Marketing Manager in two years may not be feasible. Instead, recognizing the necessary experience and steps to reach that position will help make your goal more realistic.
  • Your goal should have a clear timeframe. Once you have transitioned from a dream to a concrete goal with defined sub-goals, establish a clear timeline. Having a start and end date will help you stay focused and avoid procrastination. For example, “This week, I will schedule a feedback meeting with my manager to identify the skills I need for the Marketing Manager position. By next month, I will have identified suitable courses and enrolled in at least one. Over the next two years, I will complete all the required courses and find a mentor to guide me. Additionally, I will take on extra projects to increase my visibility and contributions at work. Every six months, I will assess my progress toward my goal.” Defining a timeline makes your roadmap visible and actionable.
  1. After setting your goals and starting the process, be open to revising and adjusting them as needed. Life flows, and change is a natural part of it—don’t be afraid to adapt, add, or remove elements. Just stay connected with your aspirations, continuously reflect on them, and nurture your relationship with your goals.

Some Personal Notes from Melike:

  • Get excited about your goals! These are the things you truly want. Engage your emotions—frequently remind yourself of how you will feel when you achieve them. You might even put up a small note or picture somewhere visible to keep your inspiration alive.
  • Celebrate every step you take toward your goal. Acknowledge that you are taking control of your life and be proud of yourself. Many people never take that step.
  • Be organized. You don’t need military discipline, but recognize that achieving your dreams requires consistent and structured effort.
  • Stay inspired by reading about others who have succeeded. Learn about the paths they took, the challenges they overcame, and what contributed to their success. This will reassure and encourage you.
  • Be mentally prepared for obstacles. Understand that overcoming challenges is part of the journey. The biggest loss in life is failing to reach your potential and abandoning your dreams because you gave up too soon.

If you only walk on sunny days, you will never reach your destination.

Paulo Coelho

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for help when needed, but avoid overwhelming yourself with too many opinions. Constantly seeking advice from others can create confusion, and some negative feedback—no matter how well-intended—might discourage you.

And now, start! It’s never too late, nor too early. You’ve taken the first step by setting your goals—now keep moving forward.

Wishing you a successful journey!
